Shades Creek House
This shingled farmhouse, crafted for a retiring businessman-turned-gentleman-farmer, is set in a wooded area along Shades Creek in rural Alabama. The owner and his wife desired a house that would authentically reflect its construction and surroundings. An exterior of rustic wood and stone creates harmony with the structure’s bucolic setting.
The layout is defined by a series of smaller roof lines that create a sense that the home has grown over time. Outdoor spaces are intertwined with interior ones to emphasize enjoyment of nature. The interior boasts plenty of exposed structural members in the ceiling. Outside, pergolas with layered beams, purlins, and frames are consumed by the flowering vines of jasmine and scuppernongs, only underscoring the importance of nature in this home.
